Ratings

What do these ratings mean? We use the following subjective ratings to classify our reading. We developed this for non-fiction books, although we now use the scheme for fiction books and also non-fiction articles.

not-to-be-missed great worth reading just OK waste of time unfinishable
5 stars - not to be missed! 4 stars - great! 3 stars - worth reading! 2 stars - just OK! 1 star - waste of time! 0 stars - unfinishable!

5 stars - not to be missed! = not-to-be-missed We give this rating for two different reasons.
1) It's either a fabulous book; engaging, well written, and very useful. 2) Or, it's a classic text that should be read if you want a solid grasp of the topic.

4 stars - great! = great We give this rating for materials that have depth, provide solid ideas, are well put together, and enjoyable to read.

3 stars - worth reading! = worth reading This rating suggests a good account, worth the time to read, but nothing necessarily life-altering.

2 stars - just OK! = just OK When reading doesn't deserve a strong recommendation, but there is something to it worth mentioning, we offer this rating. In the accompanying review, we explain what it was missing or should have been left out.

1 star - waste of time! = waste of time We usually don't include materials that seem to be a waste of time, but for some reason we're mentioning this. Be sure to read the review notes before daring to read it yourself.

0 stars - unfinishable! =

unfinishable We couldn't finish it because it was so bad, boring, shallow, or because we found it too incomprehensible.
